Growing up it was tradition to spend Memorial Day driving from town to town decorating the graves of our loved ones who had passed on.
We were taught to show respect for the resting places of those we visited, and we'd carefully clear away the grass that had overgrown the headstones and place flowers nearby.
I am grateful that my Mom took the time and energy to teach me gratitude for those who have come before. I love the quote by Peter Raible that says:
"We sit in the shade of trees we did not plant."
Our lives are built upon a foundation that was laid brick by brick by the righteous lives of those who have come before us. We are an accumulation of these men and women. Ingratitude for their sacrifices may be one of the most erosive forces acting upon this structure.
I am grateful this Memorial Day Weekend to have the opportunity to express my appreciation for those who have paved the way.

Dad, Brenda, Hali, & I just got back from our final stop at the cemetery in Ashton. I was thinking about you on the way home and how you used to always go with us to decorate graves. Good memories.
Glad to see you made it to week 27. Hope you are feeling well tonight and have another non-eventful week.
Love,
Mom
What an awesome attitude you have! I love ya cuz!
Dearest Hillary,
Growing up, Memorial Day was one my my favorite holidays because Mary Ann and kids would come to Ashton to decorate the graves. Your dad was about Colton's age then. Mom (gram)would make a nice dinner, daddy would quit work in the fields early, and we'd have a good time together. Now that's all a memory, including the association with your dear grandma, my loved and respected older sister.
It's so nice to see a new generation who treasures heritage. If you'd like, I could send occasional e-mails with family history stories and pictures, things you would have little time to enjoy in the course of your day-to-day life with a young family. Just let me know.
You certainly have won the respect and affection of your bishop and his family. The use superlatives when they speak of you and Blaine.
Lots of thoughts, love, and prayers come your way.
Anna Louise
